The Power of “Yet”: How to Keep Believing When It’s Hard

September always feels like a fresh page. The air is crisper, the routines settle in after summer’s chaos, and there’s this subtle reminder that change is possible. But for some of us, September can also be a stark reminder of what hasn’t changed—yet.

That little word—yet—is more powerful than we realize.

Why “Yet” Changes Everything

“I’m not where I want to be… yet.”
“I haven’t figured out how to make this work… yet.”
“My prayers haven’t been answered… yet.”

Adding “yet” to the end of a hard sentence doesn’t erase the struggle, but it keeps the door of hope open. It shifts the story from a period (the end) to a comma (there’s more to come).

When we say “yet,” we’re acknowledging the reality of the moment without locking ourselves into it forever. We’re telling our hearts, This is not the end of my story.

When Believing Feels Impossible

As a single mom, there are days you feel stretched beyond your capacity. The bills are due. The kids are testing boundaries. Your own dreams feel like a far-off fantasy. And when you’re stuck in survival mode, believing in “better” can feel like a luxury.

I’ve had those moments—the ones where I’m convinced this is just how life will always be. But God has a way of slipping “yet” into my thoughts, nudging me to remember:

“I am confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.” – Psalm 27:13

It’s not just about holding on—it’s about expecting that the story is still unfolding.

Practical Ways to Hold Onto ‘Yet’

  1. Speak it out loud – When the negative thoughts come, add “yet” at the end.
    • “I haven’t built my savings… yet.”
    • “I don’t have my dream job… yet.”
  2. Write it down – Keep a “Yet Journal” for prayers, dreams, and goals you’re still believing for.
  3. Look for small evidence – Celebrate tiny wins as proof that change is happening.
  4. Stay in community – Surround yourself with people who speak life and possibility over you.

Your ‘Yet’ is on God’s Calendar

The most powerful thing about “yet” is that it leaves room for God’s timing. Just because it hasn’t happened now doesn’t mean it’s denied—it might just be delayed for your protection, growth, or preparation.

So as you step into this new month, remember: your current season is not your permanent label. You are in the middle of a story that’s still being written. And when you add “yet” to your vocabulary, you give yourself permission to believe again.

Journal Prompt for September:
What am I believing for that hasn’t happened yet? How can I prepare my heart and life for it as I wait?
